that we have truly treasured for many years is now on the market. Our family has moved to the Boston area for a new job, so we must sell our home in the Berkshires, which is regarded by residents, second-home owners, and its many visitors as one of the most beautiful, pristine regions in the entire country.
The house is equally suitable for year-round residents and second-home owners. The little town of Richmond (population 1,500) is quaint and charming, and boasts a PreK-8th grade school, the Richmond Consolidated School, that is considered one of the best public schools in the Berkshires. The nearby Richmond Pond offers a public beach and boat ramp, and SoMa Catering maintains a cozy cafe next to the town post office.

The address of the house is 614 West Road in Richmond, Massachusetts. We bought it in 2003, when our children were two and three years old. It was the perfect fit for our family: a two-story Colonial with three bedrooms and a finished attic space that also holds a full bath, bringing the total number of bathrooms to 3.5. The property, nearly three acres of lush loveliness, was just as alluring to us as the house: a gently sloping yard surrounded by tall trees, through which a robust stream meanders into the woods beyond.
During the eight years we lived here, we made many improvements. We added a large living room with French doors, created a spacious, inviting dining room with a fireplace, and added custom-made furniture--two desks and floor-to-ceiling cabinets/shelves in a cherry finish--to another room that now serves as an office.

We also added a screen porch that showcases the stunning view of the backyard treetops. During the summer months, the porch serves as a prime adjunct space to the interior. Because we spend so much time there-- eating meals, playing games, reading books, visiting with friends--often we don't even close the screen door separating it from the kitchen. It's just another room in the house.
In the kitchen, we added a custom-made cabinet with plenty of storage space and shelving.
We renovated the master bathroom, which now includes a large glass shower with hand-laid tiles and an extraordinary cabinet that holds everything one could need in a bathroom and more. (I miss a whole lot about this house, but this bathroom storage area is something I really miss.)
A built-in desk, cabinets and bookshelves fill one wall of the second large bedroom.
We also created cabinets and shelves along the walls of the finished, sun-filled attic space, which serves as a playroom as well as a guest area. This floor also features a split-type air conditioner (it's really the only part of the house that needs it) and a full bathroom.

The third bedroom on the second floor is bright and fresh and splashed with sunlight.
A shed was installed outside, which adds considerable storage space to what is afforded by the two-car garage and the unfinished basement.
Thanks to the talented Adam Weinberg of Second Nature Garden Design, the landscaping is not only luxuriant, it's also low maintenance.
And this is the oh-so-quiet road on which the house is located. |
